Hip pain and hip problems
Hip pain and hip problems
Hip pain may be felt in the groin, thigh, buttock or outer hip. The cause can be the hip joint itself or the back, so a careful examination matters.
Dr. Shweta Vandurkar, orthopaedic surgeon in Thane, evaluates your history, examines the area, reviews imaging when needed, and explains every option clearly, starting with the least invasive that can work.
Seek urgent care for: Unable to stand or walk after a fall; Severe pain with a shortened or rotated leg; Hot, swollen hip with fever.

Solutions, from simple to surgical
- Pain-relief and anti-inflammatory medicines as advised
- Physiotherapy: hip strengthening and flexibility
- Walking aids for short-term relief
- Weight management and activity modification
- Image-guided injection into the hip joint (selected cases)
- Bursa injection for outer-hip pain (selected cases)
Injections are used selectively after assessment and are one part of a wider plan.
- Low-impact exercise such as cycling, swimming and walking
- Raise chairs and avoid very low seating
- Keep a healthy weight to reduce load on the hip
- Use handrails and avoid slippery floors to prevent falls
- Hip arthroscopy. Keyhole surgery for selected impingement and labral problems.
- Fracture fixation or hemiarthroplasty. For hip fractures, depending on the fracture and the patient.
- Total hip replacement. For advanced arthritis or avascular necrosis with joint damage.
- Robotic-assisted hip replacement. A surgeon-guided robotic approach to planning and implant positioning.
Robotic-assisted replacement. Dr. Shweta offers robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement for suitable patients. Robotic-assisted joint replacement uses pre-operative imaging to build a personalised plan, and a surgeon-guided robotic arm helps prepare the bone and position the implant within that plan. The surgeon stays in full control. It may improve the precision of implant alignment. Availability depends on the hospital and system, and long-term advantage over conventional surgery is not proven for every patient. Ask whether it suits you.
Where a specialised procedure is needed, Dr. Shweta will explain it clearly and, if appropriate, coordinate with the relevant specialist or hospital. Medicines and procedures are decided only after examination.
Your questions
